Contemplated systems and methods significantly improve friction stir welding of hard metals and particularly steel and stainless steel. Among other factors, the inventors found that high transverse velocity of the tool is critical to obtain pre-dictable and desirable weld quality, which is preferably achieved in such materials by minimizing spindle run out. Moreover, the transverse and angular velocities are preferably selected such as to achieve a temperature in the weld that is below the phase change temperature and/or the solid state transformation point of the materials.

L'invention porte sur des systèmes et des procédés qui améliorent de manière significative un soudage par friction-malaxage de métaux durs et en particulier de l'acier et de l'acier inoxydable. Entre autres facteurs, les inventeurs ont trouvé qu'une vitesse transversale élevée de l'outil est critique pour obtenir une qualité de soudage prévisible et souhaitable, qui est de préférence obtenue dans de tels matériaux en rendant minimal le faux-rond de la broche. De plus, les vitesses transversale et angulaire sont, de préférence, sélectionnées de façon à obtenir une température dans la soudure qui est inférieure à la température de changement de phase et/ou au point de transformation à l'état solide des matériaux.
