ABSTRACT A polarization modulator for use in optical telecommunications systems includes an integrated optical switch receiving at an input a linearly-polarized optical carrier and transferring the same to a first or a second output, according to the logic values of the bits of a modulating binary data signal. The radiations output from the switch are sent to a polarizing beam splitter with their original polarization or with a polarization rotated by 90° depending on the switch output from which they come. A signal with the original polarization or with the polarization rotated by 90° is present at the splitter output, depending on the logic values of the bits of the modulating signal.
