HIGH SPEED PUNCHING APPARATUS AND TOOL THEREFOR ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The specification describes a cutting tool assembly for use in a high speed punching apparatus for rapidly, pro- gressively cutting small portions of material from a work- piece along a preselected line, the assembly includes a punching tool which is adapted to be received within a die opening of a die button for reciprocal motion therein, the punching tool provides a shearing action of the workpiece on a downward, cutting stroke and being retracted from the work- piece on an upward, retracting stroke, the punching tool has an elongated shank of a straight cylindrical shape, a cutting surface formed proximate one end and extending only a portion of the cross section of the shank and is defined by a notch in the shank, the cutting surface has a radially extending ridge defined by radially extending surfaces axially receding from the ridge and the notch has axially extending surfaces defining an oblique angle with the radially extending surfaces and connected therewith by a connected radius whereby the cutting surface and the axially extending surfaces of the notch with the connecting radius inhibit hangup of chips on the cutting surface.
