A method and apparatus for looking up a key associated with a packet to determine a route through a routing device, the method including, upon receipt of a key, forward traversing one or more nodes which make up a trie stored in a memory by evaluating at each node traversed a bit in the key as indicated by a bit-to-test indicator associated with each node. A value of the bit in the key determining the path traversed along the trie. The method includes locating an end node having a route and comparing the route to the key (528). If they match, destination information associated with the end node is outputted to guide the transfer of the packet through the routing device (529). If they do not match, the trie is traversed backwards to locate a best match for the key.

L'invention concerne un procédé et un appareil de recherche d'une clé associée à un paquet, permettant de déterminer un itinéraire au moyen d'un dispositif d'acheminement. Ledit procédé consiste, dès réception d'une clé, à traverser vers l'avant un ou plusieurs noeuds qui constituent un système Trie rangé dans une mémoire par évaluation d'un bit de la clé au niveau de chaque noeud traversé, conformément aux indications d'un indicateur de bit à tester, associé à chaque noeud. Une valeur du bit de la clé détermine le parcours suivi dans le trie. Le procédé consiste à localiser un noeud d'extrémité ayant une voie et à comparer la voie à la clé. Si ces dernières correspondent, les informations de destination associées au noeud d'extrémité sont produites pour guider le transfert du paquet dans le dispositif routeur. Si elle ne correspondent pas, le système trie est traversé en sens inverse en vue de la recherche du meilleur appariement pour la clé.
