ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A weighing scale for weighing individual items fed in rapid succession along a handling path including a tray resiliently supported for movement through a weighing range. Mechanism is operatively associated with the tray for measuring the degree of tray movement in the weighing range to determine the weight of each successive individual item as it is momentarily supported on edge on the tray. The invention makes possible a weighing operation in which items such, for example as pieces of mail, can be arrested on the weighing tray, weighed and discharged from the weighing station in a small fraction of a second making it possible to weigh several thousand items each hour.
