High strength and high toughness aluminum alloy forgings having, as a whole, a strength at .sigma. 0.2 of 315 N/mm2 or more and an impact shock value of 20 J/cm2 or more, wherein the aluminum alloy material contains Mg: 0.6 - 1.6%, Si: 0.8 - 1.8%, Cu: 0.1 - 1.0%, Fe: 0.30 or less, one or more of Mn: 0.15 - 0.6%, Cr: 0.1 - 0.2% and Zr: 0.1 - 0.2%, and the balance of Al and inevitable impurities, wherein the volume fraction of total constituents phase particles (Mg2Si and Al-Fe-Si-(Mn, Cr, Zr) series intermetallic compounds) in the aluminum alloy structure in the forgings is 1.5% or less per unit area.
