ABSTRACT A nonmagnetic austenitic nickel base alloy and articles made therefrom containing Image and the balance nickel plus incidental elements. The alloy is characterized by a 0.2% yield strength of at least 1241 MPa (180 ksi) in the as forged and heat treated condition without the requirement for cold working. The alloy provides large steam generator retaining rings having improved properties. SPECIFICATION This invention relates to a high strength austenitic nickel base alloy and, more particularly, to such an alloy and nonmagnetic parts made therefrom having high strength with a unique degree of toughness and freedom from segregation. As brought out in U.S. patent No. 3,935,037 granted on January 27, 1976 to D. R. Muzyka and R. C. Gebeau (one of the joint inventors of the present invention) and assigned to the assignee of the present application, it has long been sought to increase the strength of large nonmagnetic austenitic parts of relatively large cross section. While the alloy of the 3,935,037 patent made available an alloy capable of attaining a 0.2% yield strength (Y.S.) of at least 1241 MPa (180 ksi) with significantly less cold work than had thereto- fore been required, there nevertheless remains a demand for an alloy which is capable of providing such parts without the need for cold working and which are nevertheless capable of meeting the requirement of a 0.2% Y.S. of 1241 MPa (180 ksi) with adequate toughness and without the need for any cold work. U.S. patent No. 3,046,108 granted on July 24, 1962 to H. L. Eiselstein discloses a broad range of nickel or nickel- cobalt base nonmagnetic austenitic alloys which was designed to assure a minimum 0.2% yield strength of 690 MPa (100 ksi) combined with high stress rupture strength at elevated tempera- tures, e.g. temperatures of about 1200-1350 F (about 650-730 C).
