A method is provided for reinforcing liquid storage tanks such as large above-ground water or petroleum reservoirs so as to reduce the likelihood of disastrous failure when such tanks are subjected to earthquakes or physical injury due to human activity in the area. The method includes the step of applying a resin-impregnated fabric layer around the outer perimeter wall of the tank, with a greater number of layers typically being required near the bottom of the tank than near the top. The method is easily adapted according to the desired vertical and horizontal reinforcement required at various heights along the tank wall, and for tanks that have a shape other than perfectly round or that have irregularities in their surface such as inflow and outflow pipes.
