A seal formed between two parts that will remain gas tight in high temperature operating environments which experience frequent thermal cycling, which is particularly useful as an insulating joint in solid oxide fuel cells. A first metal part is attached to a reinforcing material. A glass forming material in the positioned in between the first metal part and the second part, and a seal is formed between the first metal part and the second part by heating the glass to a temperature suitable to melt the glass forming materials. The glass encapsulates and bonds at least a portion of the reinforcing material, thereby adding tremendous strength to the overall seal. A ceramic material may be added to the glass forming materials, to assist in forming an insulating barrier between the first metal part and the second part and to regulating the viscosity of the glass during the heating step.

La présente invention concerne un joint formé entre deux parties qui doivent rester étanches au gaz dans des environnements de fonctionnement à haute température et qui sont soumises à un cycle thermique fréquent, ce joint étant tout particulièrement utile dans des piles à combustible à oxyde solide. Une première partie métallique est fixée à un matériau de renfort. Un matériau formant du verre est positionné entre les première et deuxième parties métalliques et un joint est formé entre les première et deuxième parties métalliques par chauffage du verre à une température appropriée pour provoquer la fusion des matériaux formant du verre. Le verre englobe au moins une partie du matériau de renfort et se lie à ce dernier, ce qui renforce très fortement la résistance du joint tout entier. Un matériau céramique peut être ajouté aux matériaux formant du verre pour contribuer à la formation d'une barrière isolante entre les première et deuxième parties métalliques et pour réguler la viscosité du verre pendant l'étape de chauffage.
