A high strength ceramic body and a method of making same are disclosed. The ceramic body is formed of ceramic composition containing 2.8-5.0 % by weight MgO, an effective amount of grain growth inhibiting material, and the balance being essentially zirconia. The crystalline microstructure of the ceramic body comprises grains of cubic zirconia having an average grain size of less than about 30 microns in major dimension, 0.1-8.7 % by volume of discrete particles of the grain growth inhibiting material, and precipitates of tetragonal zirconia having a substantially ellipsoidal shape with a long dimension of about 0.1-0.4 microns.
L'invention concerne un corps céramique à résistance élevée et un procédé de fabrication correspondant. Le corps céramique est formé à partir d'une composition céramique contenant de 2,8 à 5,0 % en poids de MgO et une quantité efficace de substance inhibant la croissance des grains, le reste étant principalement constitué de zirconium. La microstructure cristalline du corps céramique comprend des grains de zirconium cubique possédant une granulométrie moyenne de moins de 30 micromètres dans la dimension principale, de 0,1 à 8,7 % en volume de particules discrètes d'une substance inhibant la croissance des grains et, enfin, des précipités de zirconium tétragonal, de forme sensiblement elliptique et dont la dimension principale est de l'ordre de 0,1 à 0,4 micromètres.
