An oil base environmentally benign drilling fluid composition having a stable high viscosity and high gel strength at use temperatures of up to at least 450 ~F. The drilling fluid includes a low toxicity biodegradable oil vehicle, and as a viscosifying agent an organoclay which is the reaction product of a mineral clay mixture and an alkyl quaternary ammonium salt. The mineral clay mixture comprises at least 50 % by weight of a mineral clay selected from the group consisting of sepiolite, palygorskite and mixtures of sepiolite and palygorskite; and substantially the balance of the mixture is a smectite. Conventional additives such as emulsifiers and fillers may also be present in the drilling fluid.
L'invention concerne une composition de fluide de forage sans danger pour l'environnement à base d'huile présentant une haute viscosité stable et une haute force du gel à des températures d'utilisation pouvant aller jusqu'à au moins 450 ·F. Le fluide de forage comprend un véhicule de l'huile biodégradable à faible toxicité, et comme agent d'amélioration de viscosité, une argile organique qui est le produit d'un mélange d'argile minérale et d'un sel d'ammonium quaternaire alkyle. Le mélange d'argile minérale comprend au moins 50 % en poids d'une argile minérale sélectionnée dans le groupe formé par la sépiolite, la palygorskite et des mélanges de sépiolite et de palygorskite; le reste du mélange se constitue essentiellement de smectite. Le fluide de forage peut également contenir des additifs classiques tels que des émulsifiants et des charges.
