A high temperature thermal refractor or other incinerator is disclosed having a primary burn chamber within which gaseous, fluid or solid waste material is heated or burnt for sterilization or destruction. Exhaust gases or vapours cast off by the combustion process exit the burn chamber through a gas discharge outlet. While the temperature in the primary burn chamber may be high enough to burn the waste material, other harmful exhaust gases might be created by such combustion. A secondary afterburn chamber is attached to the gas discharge outlet of the primary burn chamber, within which an afterburner burns off the exhaust gases resulting from the primary burn at an independently controlled temperature.
