ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process for preparing methoxy functional diphenyl ether polymers (III) comprising heating in the presence of an acid catalyst at 65°C to 260°C an alkoxy functional compound (I) with a monomeric phenolic reac- tant (II) having the formula Image where R is hydrogen, an alkyl radical of 1-20 carbon atoms, an aryl radical of 6-20 carbon atoms, or Image and R1 is hydrogen, alkyl or aryl, m is 1-3, o is 1-5, p is 0-3, x is oxygen, sulfur or C1-C3 alkylidene and q is 0-1. (I) is prepared by heating at 50°C to 250°C napthalene, diphenyl oxide, diphenyl sulfide, or their alkylated or halogenated derivatives or mixtures thereof, with formaldehyde or formaldehyde-yielding derivative, water and a hydroxy aliphatic hydrocarbon compound having at least one free hydroxyl group and 1-4 carbon atoms. When preparing (III) there can be employed more than one reactant (II) per equivalent of (I) and an aldehyde source, or one can use an acidic catalyst and then react with an additional aldehyde source in the presence of a basic catalyst. The products (III) can be blended with suitable fillers at elevated temperature and pressure to prepare an excellent automobile brake lining material.
