ABSTRACT A High Tensile Strength Transmission Cable and a method of making the same. A high tensile strength transmission cable 1 formed from a multi-strand cable 2 having a plurality of main strands 3,4,5 surrounding a relatively hard core 6 including the sequential steps of at least partially compacting the cable 2, parting the main strands 3,4,5, removing the relatively hard core 6, inserting a relatively soft core 7 as a substitute for the hard core 6 and laying up again and closing the main strands 3,4,5 to form the cable 1. The relatively soft core 7 is of circular cross-section of substantially the same diameter as the hard core wire 6, and formed from optical fibres, and electrical conductors. In an alternative form the soft core is of a ribbon like form having ribs or flanges interposed between the main strands and formed of electrically insulating material. Transmission elements may be provided in the ribbon. Electrical insulating sheathing may be provided around the cable.
