Discontinuous diamond particulate containing metal matrix composites of high thermal conductivity and methods for producing these composites are provided. The manufacturing method includes producing a thin reaction formed and diffusion bonded functionally graded interactive SiC surface layer on diamond particles. The interactive surface converted SiC coated diamond particles are then disposed into a mold and between the particles and permitted to rapidly solidify under pressure. The surface conversion interative SiC coating on the diamond particles achieves minimal interface thermal resistance with the metal matrix which translates into good mechanical strength and stiffness of the composites and facilitates near theoretical thermal conductivity levels to be attained in the composite. Secondary working of the diamond metal composite can be performed for producing thin sheet product.

L'invention concerne des composites à matrice métallique contenant des particules de diamant discontinues de haute conductivité thermique ainsi que des procédés de production de ces composites. Le procédé de fabrication consiste à former, sur les particules de diamant, une mince couche de surface SiC de réaction interactive à matériau à gradient de fonctionnalité soudée par diffusion. Les particules de diamant enrobées Sic à conversion de surface interactive sont ensuite placées dans un moule pour subir une solidification rapide sous pression. Les particules de diamant à revêtement SiC interactif à conversion de surface présentent une résistance thermique d'interface minimale vis à vis de la matrice métallique, ce qui confère aux composites une bonne résistance mécanique et une bonne rigidité, et favorise des taux de conductivité thermiques quasi-théoriques. Un second usinage du composite métallique de diamant permet d'obtenir un produit à feuille mince.
