ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An x-ray tube anode target surface is provided with a coating for enhancing thermal emittance of the target. To provide the coating, a mixture of fine particles is deposited to coat the target surface. The mixture is then heated at a pressure of 10-5 Torr or lower and at a temperature in the range of 1650°C to 1900°C. The mixture includes from about 2.5% up to about 20% by weight of TiO2, and from 70% to 93.5% by weight of at least one oxide selected from a first group consisting of ZrO2, HfO, MgO, CeO2, La2O3 and SrO. To stabilize the oxide selected from the first group, the remainder of the mixture is at least one oxide selected from a second group consisting of CaO and Y2O3.
