A method and apparatus for hyperpolarization of flowing noble gases is disclosed. The apparatus is capable of hyperpolarizing noble gases in a continuous flow arrangement. Noble gases such as xenon-129 and helium-3 can be hyperpolarized using the disclosed method and apparatus. Preferably, the noble gas is hyperpolarized via spin exchange between atoms of the noble gas and an alkali metal such as rubidium. Also, a method and apparatus for accumulation (17) and/or storage of hyperpolarized noble gases in a continuous flow arrangement is provided. The method and apparatus enable large scale production, storage, and usage of hyperpolarized noble gases for numerous purposes, including imaging of human and animal subjects through magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques.
L'invention concerne un procédé et un appareil d'accumulation de 129Xe hyperpolarisé. Le procédé et l'appareil de l'invention permettent l'accumulation continue ou intermittente de 129Xe hyperpolarisé s'écoulant sous forme congelée. Le procédé permet également l'accumulation de 129Xe hyperpolarisé à l'exclusion d'autres gaz, permettant ainsi la purification de 129Xe hyperpolarisé. De plus, l'invention concerne un moyen d'accumulation (17) de 129Xe intégré dans le moyen d'hyperpolarisation de 129Xe en un agencement à écoulement continu ou pulsé. Le procédé et l'appareil permettent la production, le stockage et l'utilisation à grande échelle de 129Xe hyperpolarisé dans de nombreuses applications, notamment l'imagerie de sujets humains et animaux par des techniques d'imagerie par résonance magnétique (IRM).
