Abstract Absorbent polymeric compositions are prepared by graft polymerizing acrylonitrile onto flour or other starch- containing substrates and then subjecting the flour- polyacrylonitrile graft copolymers to alkaline saponifica- tion. Compositions prepared from gelatinized flour absorb from 1800-3000 times their weight or deionized water.
