The present invention relates to highly attenuated animal smallpox viral strains and to the use thereof as paramunity inducers or for producing vector vaccines. As a result of the high attenuation process, the claimed animal smallpox strains lose their virulent and immunising properties. The invention also relates to a method for producing such highly attenuated pox virus strains and the use thereof for inducing paramunity, i.e. for activating the non-specific immune system in mammals and humans or for producing vector vaccines for specific immunisation with the positive side-effect of paramunisation. The claimed highly attenuated animal smallpox viruses are thus suitable for preventing and treating diseases associated with an immune deficiency. Preferred embodiments relate to highly attenuated orthopox- (e.g. camel smallpox viruses), leporipox- (e.g. myxoma viruses), avipox-, parapox- and other orthopox viral strains, such as MVA, which have excellent paramunisation properties and in which the immunising properties have been lost.

La présente invention concerne des souches de virus varioliformes animales fortement atténuées et leur utilisation pour induire la paramunité ou pour préparer des vaccins à vecteur. Grâce au procédé de forte atténuation, les souches de virus varioliformes animales de l'invention n'ont plus aucune propriété virulente et immunisante. L'invention a également pour objet un procédé pour préparer des souches de virus varioliformes fortement atténuées de ce type, et leur utilisation pour induire la paramunité, c.-à-d. pour activer le système immunitaire non spécifique chez des mammifères et chez l'homme, ou pour préparer des vaccins à vecteur destinés à une immunisation spécifique avec l'effet secondaire positif d'une paramunisation. Les virus varioliformes animaux fortement atténués de l'invention conviennent ainsi pour prévenir et traiter des troubles associés à l'immunodéficience. Des formes de réalisation préférées concernent des souches fortement atténuées de virus orthopox (par ex. les virus varioliformes du chameau), de virus leporipox (par ex. les myxomavirus), de virus avipox, parapox ou d'autres virus orthopox tels que MVA, qui ont d'excellentes propriétés de paramunisation, et ont perdu leurs propriétés d'immunisation.
