ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A composition and method for the preparation thereof, said composition comprising highly dispersed, discrete particles of metal selected from the group con- sisting essentially of Ni, Mo, Co and mixtures thereof on the surface of channels in graphite, wherein said channels are on the surface of the graphite oriented in direction parallel to the basal plane thereof and wherein the average diameter of the metal particles is below about 100.ANG.. This composition is an effective catalyst for hydrogenation reactions and the dispersed metal will gasify the graphite at elevated temperature in the presence of steam.
