Highly effective polarizers are described having a degree of polarization P of at least 95% and a dichroic ratio Q E = quotient of the extinction in the blocking position to the extinction in the transmitting position, of 10 or more over almost the whole wavelength range of visible light between 400 and 800 nm, the said polarizers comprising polymer products containing polyacetylene, in whose matrix 70 to 90% of all comonomer units are vinyl alcohol units. The polarizers are used in the form of films with a stretch ratio (see fig. I) (1 = length after stretching, l o = length before stretching) of more than 300%. They can be produced by polymerization of acetylene in the solution of a copolymer in which 70 to 90% of all comonomer units are vinyl alcohol units, in the presence of a nickel catalyst.

Description de polariseurs très efficaces présentant un degré de polarisation P d'au moins 95 % et un rapport dichroïque QE, quotient de l'extinction en position bloquée sur l'extinction en position de transmission, de 10 ou plus, sur pratiquement toute la plage de longueur d'onde de lumière visible, soit entre 400 et 800 nm; lesdits polariseurs sont composés de produits polymériques renfermant du polyacétylène, dont 70 à 90 % des comonomères matriciels sont des unités d'alcool vinylique. Les polariseurs sont utilisés sous forme de pellicules, dont le taux d'étirage (voir fig. I) (1 = longueur après étirage, lo = longueur avant étirage) est supérieur à 300 %. Ils peuvent être produits par polymérisation de l'acétylène dans la solution d'un copolymère, dont 70 à 90 % de toutes les unités comonomères sont des unités d'alcool vinylique, en présence d'un catalyseur au nickel.
