A hinge lock has two opposing surfaces which, when placed in proximity to outside surfaces of respective leaves of a conventional, unadapted hinge, prevent the hinge from opening. The opposing surfaces of the hinge lock abut exterior surfaces of respective hinge leaves and resist movement of the hinge leaves apart from one another. A hinge knuckle cover portion is connected between the opposing surfaces and encloses the hinge knuckle when the hinge lock is placed over and around the hinge knuckle. When so placed, the opposing surfaces of the hinge lock resist hinge-opening force applied to the hinge. The hinge knuckle cover portion is substantially cylindrical and can have a substantially non-circular cross section which matches a substantially non-circular cross section of the hinge knuckle such that the hinge knuckle cover portion serves to resist movement of hinge knuckle elements of opposing hinge leaves from moving with respect to one another. In one embodiment, at least one of the opposing surfaces of a hinge lock is a surface of a trimmable extension. The trimmable extension is made of a relatively soft, friction-reducing material and can be trimmed with an ordinary utility knife to specifically fit a particular hinge. The trimmable extension can be attached to, or integral with, a sleeve which lines the interior of the hinge lock and which facilitates placement of the hinge lock over and around a hinge knuckle and removal of the hinge lock from the hinge knuckle.
