24046 ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The stem of the femoral component of a hip joint prosthesis is of a cross-sectional shape that is generally rounded about a large portion of the periphery and is truncated at a flattened lateral side. This shape minimizes stress in the stem when the composite structure is intact and when the proximal support for the stem has been lost and minimizes the decrease in stress in the bone (compared to the anatomical state) when the composite prosthetic structure is intact. . -18-
