ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE There is disclosed a method for the detection of HIV-l envelope sequences by the polymerase chain reaction using inosine-substituted "consensus" primers. The primers, modifications of SK68 and SK69, are highly specific and sensitive and they prevent false-negative results due to variation in the HIV-1 genome. Consensus primers are needed to ensure the detection of most, if not all, variants of HIV-l including American, African and newly emerging strains. The primers are of particular value for HIV polymerase chain reaction testing of dry blood samples providing similar specificity and sensitivity.
