The invention relates to a method for predicting the onset, diagnosing, and/or prognosticating dementing diseases. The method comprises determining a method for assessing dementing diseases in a patient which comprises: determining the concentration of heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) in plasma or lymphocytes or both, obtained from a patient; and comparing said concentration with that of HO-1 in plasma or lymphocytes or both, of a control. The method is useful where the dementing disease is any of Alzheimer's Disease, Age-Associated Congnitive Decline, Progressive Supranuclear Palsy, Vascular Dementia, Lewy Body Dementia, and Huntington's Disease.
