A hockey stick handle having stronger material in the ankle portion thereof is provided for use in the making of a hockey stick. The handle comprises a plurality of adjacent, elongate body sections of rectangular cross-section, such that each adjacent set of the body sections are affixed together. Each body section comprises an elongate upper portion and a shorter bottom portion. The upper portion is comprised of a first material such as a softwood and the bottom portion is comprised of a second material such as a hardwood having greater resistance to breakage than the first material. The upper and bottom portions are affixed to each other by means of an interconnecting joint, whereby the edges of the interconnecting joints of adjacent body sections are offset relative to each other.
