An overload detector attachable to a hoisting rope, the hoisting rope being for lifting a load. The overload detector includes a first arm having first and second ends, the first arm including a first clamp assembly in proximity to the first end for clamping the first arm to the rope. The overload detector further includes a second arm having third and fourth ends, the second arm including a second clamp assembly in proximity to the third end for slidably receiving the rope. The first and second arms are configured and sized such that the rope is bent by the overload detector when the rope is tensed by an external force. The overload detector further includes a pivot pivotably connecting the first and second arms, a first contact switch element connected to the first arm in proximity to the second end, a second contact switch element connected to the second arm in proximity to the fourth end, and a biasing element configured and sized for biasing the first and second contact switch elements towards each other.
