A holder for a writing instrument includes, in combination, a magnet and a metallic plate. The magnet is secured to either a writing instrument or an article of clothing, preferably a hard hat or baseball cap. The metallic plate is secured to the other of the writing instrument or the article of clothing. The writing instrument is magnetically held until a force is exerted to overcome the magnetic attraction between the magnet and the metallic plate.
