A hole opener includes a drive stem having a peripheral sidewall defining a first outer diameter. Several cutter mounting legs extend from the peripheral sidewall of the drive stem. The cutter mounting legs are circumferentially spaced around the drive stem and define a second outer diameter. Several cutters are rotatably mounted on rotational axes which extend between the drive stem and the cutter mounting legs. Each of the rotational axes is at an acute angle of less than 45 degrees to the drive stem. Each of the cutters has a length that is greater than the distance between the first diameter and the second diameter. The hole opener described has a greater cutting surface than prior art hole openers.
