ABSTRACT OF THE INVENTION A blood oxygenator which includes a new hollow fiber element and a method for making same. The oxygenator ele- ment utilizes gas permeable hollow fibers to transfer oxygen into and carbon dioxide from blood flowing around the outside of the fibers while oxygen flows through the fiber lumens. The hollow fibers are arranged in a plurality of layers in annular ring form on a hollow cylindrical core with the ends secured to each other and to the core in spaced apart tubesheets. Each of the layers of helically wound fibers comprises hundreds of axially spaced apart fibers that are subtantially equally radially distant from the peripheral surface of the core so arranged that the fibers in the adjacent layers cross each other to form small interconnected gaps that permit thin film, radial direction blood flow through the gaps with a low blood phase pressure drop and efficient gas transfer. The method comprises the steps of forming the hollow fibers into a tape of substantially uniformly spaced apart fibers, and spirally winding that tape on a supporting hollow core to form the new blood oxygenator element. The new blood oxygenator element is sealed into a shell to form spaced apart oxygen header chambers at opposite ends of the core that are sealed from the annular blood chamber that surrounds the blood oxygenator element; the shell is provided with inlet and outlet ports for supplying oxygen to one header chamber, through the hollow fiber lumens and out the opposite chamber while blood is supplied to the core, permeates radially outwardly around the hollow fibers and through its layers to the surrounding annular blood chamber and exits as purified and oxygenated blood through the outlet port. The blood oxygenator is integrated into a single unit assembly having a top blood reservoir attached to a blood heater that is attached to the blood oxygenator in vertical array.
