Abstract A new structural assembly is described comprising a core formed of a lightweight foamed metal and an outer shell encasing this core, preferably in tight mechanical contact therewith. The core is preferably formed of an aluminum-based alloy containing finely divided stabilizer particles and the outer shell is formed of a wide variety of materials, including metals, plastics, etc. The product obtained combines very light weight with good energy absorbing, crush resistance, sound absorption and stiffness characteristics.
