ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A device for setting a hook in the mouth of a fish has a base supporting and an upwardly inclined arm. The front or cantilevered end of the arm supports a freely suspended tension member which is fitted at its lower end with a hook-like finger. Beneath the finger, there is trigger mechanism including a trigger plate and a latch bar. The finger engages the latch bar so that the mechanism is held in a set position by the upward pull exerted by the tension member. A fishing rod is placed alongside and mainly to the rear of the device so that a tip portion only of the rod rests on the trigger plate in a position over the finger and with the fishing line suspended in the water. When a fish nibbles at the bait, the trigger mechanism is released causing the finger to snatch the tip of the rod and therefore the line upwardly to hook the fish.
