The present invention is a heat exchanger to recover heat from drainwater in a building (also referred to as wastewater) or from industrial/commercial process fluids. The heat exchanger is for horizontal use where it replaces a convenient length of horizontal drainpipe. The upper first conduit of the heat exchanger for the drainwater is a large bore, flat bottomed (hemicylindrical) copper tube with no obstacle to drainwater flow. The lower second conduit heat exchanger is for the cold feed water of a water heater and is a flat topped tube, (hemicylinder) bound tightly to the first conduit so that maximum heat transfer can occur therebetween. The ends of the upper first conduit are adapted to connect with round drainpipes either by forming a round end or by attaching adaptors thereto. The ends of the lower second conduit are sealed and adapted to connect to regular water piping. In forming the tubes, a groove therebetween provides a vent to the ambient that provides visual indication of any leakage.
