A B S T R A C T A method for surfacing with horizontal electroslag welding using a strip electrode to obtain beads while avoiding surface defects. The flow direction and rate of the molten slag and metal is controlled by passage direct through one or more solenoids. The resulting magnetic field acts in mutually opposite directions at both sides of the molten pool and perpendicular to the base metal.
