Abstract of the Disclosure A catalytic reactor useful for carrying out a catalytic reaction wherein gaseous or vaporized reactants are flowed into contact with a mass of particle-form catalytic material comprises a horizontally disposed reaction zone, foraminous retaining means disposed within said reaction zone transversely thereto and occupying the complete cross-section of said reaction zone available for the flow of gaseous or vaporized reactants therethrough form one end to the other end of the reaction zone, the foraminous retaining means defining a transverse volume or space within the reaction zone along a portion of length thereof, said transverse volume or space adapted to be filled with particle-form catalytic material, and a chamber disposed at the upper portion and integral with said reaction zone in open communication at the bottom end thereof with said trans- verse volume or space and closed at the upper end thereof, the chamber being adapted to be substantially filled with particle-form catalytic material for maintaining the transverse zone or spaced filled with particle-form catalytic material such that as said gaseous or vaporized reactants flow through the reaction zone the gaseous or vaporized reactants come into contact with said particle-form catalytic material to effect the desired catalytic reaction. The catalytic reactor is generally useful for carrying out catalytic reactions involv- ing contact between gaseous or vaporized reactants with a mass of particle-form catalytic material and, in one embodi- ment, is particularly useful as a catalytic recombiner for boiling water nuclear reactors wherein condenser off-gases containing steam, radiolytic hydrogen, radiolytic oxygen and other gases are brought into contact with particle-form catalytic material, such as a platinum-group-metal-containing catalyst, e.g. platinum-containing catalyst, so as to effect reaction between the radiolytic hydrogen and radiolytic oxygen to produce steam which is condensed to water and re- covered, thereby substantially reducing the volume of remain- ing gases, such as leakage air and radioactive xenon and radioactive krypton, to be subsequently handled for disposal.
