"HORIZONTAL TAPPING FURNACE" ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The tapping passage of a metallurgical furnace is disposed generally horizontally in a lower region of the furnace wall structure below the upper level of the liquid metal; a closure member is pivotally movable relative to an outer end of the tapping passage to open and close access to the passage; the closure has a gas injection nozzle for injecting air under low pressure into the tapping passage to remove temporary plugging material in said passage in preparation for discharge of the liquid metal.
