TITI,E OF THE INVENTION: HOT CATHODE DISCHARGE LAMP LIGHTING DEVICE ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE: A parallel connected circuit oE a capacitor and a switching element in a high frequency and high vol- tage generating means for a discharge lamp lighting device controls the preheating current to the filaments of a discharge lamp at the starting time for providing a sufficient filament preheating. The switching ele- ment may be of the current controlled resistance type, such as a switching semiconductor ancl has a break-over voltage lower than the capacitor -terminal voltage in the initial ignition period and higher than the capaci- tor terminal voltage in the reignition period after the initiaI ignition period, whereby the lamp filament may be sufficiently preheated for improving the lumen-per- watt efficiency of the lighting device. The capacitor of the parallel connected circuit acts as an intermit- tent capacitor in the high frequency and high voltage generating means which comprises an oscillation circuit having an oscillation capacitor, a non-linear inductor and a thyristor. 1229/ar - 1 -
