2053296 9113298 PCTABS00007 A hot gas defrost refrigeration system has a compressor (10), a condenser (20), a receiver (60), an evaporator (40), interconnected by fluid passage means and incorporating valve means to cause refrigerant to flow sequentially through the compressor, condenser, receiver and evaporator to the compressor during the refrigeration cycle. The refrigeration system includes a superheater (70) and defrost passage means (126, 136, 139, 106, 140, 142, 128), including valve means (96, 138, 88), connecting the evaporator outlet (52) to the condenser inlet (26) and connecting the condenser outlet (28) through the superheater (70) to the compressor inlet (12), bypassing the receiver (60). The passage means connecting the compressor outlet (14) with the evaporator inlet (48) includes a superheat passage (78) in heat exchange relationship with the superheater (70) for transferring heat from the refrigerant discharged from the compressor outlet (14) to the refrigerant delivered to the compressor inlet (12) during the defrost cycle. During the defrost cycle, refrigerant flows sequentially from the compressor (10) to the evaporator (40), then through the defrost passage means (126, 136, 139) to the condenser (20) and then to the superheater (76) to the compressor (10). The condenser (20) is utilized as a reevaporator during defrost and the superheater exchanges heat between compressor inlet (12) and suction refrigerant to enhance system operation during the defrost cycle.
