A group of wireless APs, including an active primary AP (14) and one or more inactive backup APs (16), responds to the failure of the active AP. Backup APs (16) passively detect the absence of the primary AP (14) from a coverage area and become active. If more than one Backup AP (16) attempts to assume the role of the primary AP (14), contention is resolved by applying a conflict resolution algorithm.
