ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method of clarifying water to remove suspended matter therefrom comprising preparing a suspension of bentonite clay particles in water having a temperature within the range of about 70°F to 200°F, aging the suspension for a time period of not more than about three hours to allow the clay particlesto swell, and adding the aged suspension to a body of water to be clarified. This procedure of hydrating the bentonite clay at an elevated temperature has the advantages of both markedly shortening the time needed for hydration, and improving the efficiency of the hydration process.
