ABSTRACT An improved form of connector for rods for collapsible structures is described. In the example hemispherical projections from either side of a tongue affixed to the end of a rod inserted in the connector serve as the pivot for the hinging action for moving the rod to the collapsed position. The improvement lies in the fact that when lateral and rotational stresses on the rod, or rods, joining the connector, give rise to reaction stresses from the troughs formed to receive the hemispheres, the curved contact surface between the troughs and the hemispheres will transmit these reaction forces back with components in all three spacial dimensions, thereby diffusing the reaction stresses and rendering the tongue less likely to stress failure than previous examples of such connectors, which were, prone to channelling the reaction stresses into one or two planes only. The present invention is also more likely to hold a solid expanded position than previous examples utilizing fully spherical joining parts on the rod-ends, which tend to allow exaggerated movement of the rod in all planes.
