A human ECM-1 polypeptide and DNA (RNA) encoding such polypeptide and a procedure for producing such polypeptide by recombinant techniques is disclosed. Also disclosed are methods for utilizing such polypeptide for stimulating the differentiation in growth of osteoblasts and osteoclasts, which may be used to promote the healing of bone fractures and de novo bone formation, for osteoporosis, for and to promote angiogenesis. Antagonists to the polypeptide of the present invention are also disclosed which may be utilized to treat osteodystrophy, osteohypertrophy, osteoma, osteoblastoma and cancers. Diagnostic assays for identifying mutations in nucleic acid sequence encoding a polypeptide of the present invention.

On décrit un polypeptide ECM-1 humain et de l'ADN (ARN) codant ce polypeptide, ainsi qu'un procédé de production dudit polypeptide à l'aide de techniques de recombinaison. On décrit également des procédés d'utilisation du polypeptide pour stimuler la différenciation et la croissance d'ostéoblastes et d'ostéoclastes, qu'on peut utiliser pour activer la réparation des fractures osseuses et la formation osseuse de novo pour l'ostéoporose, pour l'angiogénèse et pour favoriser cette dernière. On décrit également des antagonistes du polypeptide de cette invention qu'on peut utiliser pour traiter l'ostéodystrophie, l'ostéohypertrophie, l'ostéome, l'ostéoblastome et les cancers; et des dosages de diagnostic qui permettent d'identifier des mutations dans la séquence d'acide nucléique codant un polypeptide de cette invention.
