A human powered motor comprises a cart on which are fitted the seats of the persons who activate it. The said cart, which plays the same role as a piston in a conventional internal combustion engine, moves along a guide when acted upon by a mechanism which comprises articulated levers and foot supports and transfers to it the combined force of the hands, feet and bodies (weight shift) of the persons powering it. Through an arm and crank, the cart transmits the rotary movement ultimately obtained to a flywheel and from there through gearing (toothed wheel - conical pinion) to the drive shaft which drives, for example, a boat propeller.
Un moteur à propulsion humaine comprend un chariot sur lequel on trouve les chaises de ceux qui l'actionnent. Ce chariot, qui joue le rôle du piston du moteur classique à explosion, se déplace au long d'un guidage grâce à un mécanisme contentant des leviers articulés et des supports "plante de pied" et qui lui transmet la force conjuguée des mains, des pieds et du corps (balancement du corps) de ceux qui l'entraînent. Le chariot par l'intermédiaire d'une bielle et d'un vilebrequin transmet le mouvement de rotation finalement obtenu à un disque volant et ensuite par un engrenage (couronne dentée - pignon conique) à l'arbre moteur qui actionnera, par exemple, un hélice de bateau.
