The present invention provides methods of detecting prostate cancer employing biomarkers, including hZIPl, zinc and citrate. Also provided are antibodies to detect hZIPl protein or peptides and an expression vector comprising a genetic sequence effective to increase uptake of zinc into a prostate cell upon expression thereof. Furthermore, methods of treating prostate cancer and of increasing uptake of zinc into a prostate cell are provided.
