A hybrid alternator includes a stator (10) and a rotor (20), with the rotor (20) having longitudinal separate wound field (24) and permanent magnet (38) rotor portions. A rotor excitation circuit applies a forward polarity to the wound field rotor portion (24) to increase output in a boosting mode at low RPMs and a reverse polarity to decrease output at high RPMs in a bucking mode to maintain a constant voltage output. Alternative embodiments combine a magnetic flux concentrating design for efficient low speed operation with integral strength for high speed capability. Dual voltage output is provided using only one stator winding. A three state voltage regulator allows voltage regulation without inducing reverse currents onto the power bus in the lightly loaded or no battery conditions. The regulator has automatic interlocking to automatically turn on and off without risk.

Un circuit d'excitation du rotor applique une polarité avant sur la partie champ bobiné (24) du rotor pour augmenter le niveau de sortie dans un mode de tension additionnelle à des vitesses de rotation basses et une polarité inverse pour diminuer le niveau de sortie à des vitesses de rotation élevées dans un mode d'opposition pour maintenir une tension de sortie constante. D'autres modes de réalisation combinent une conception concentrant le flux magnétique pour un fonctionnement efficace à vitesse faible avec une structure intégrale pour le fonctionnement à vitesse élevée. Une tension de sortie double est obtenue soit grâce à deux bobinages de stator, soit grâce à un circuit de conversion de tension. Une tension de sortie unique est obtenue en utilisant seulement un bobinage de stator. Un régulateur de tension à trois états permet la régulation de la tension sans induire des courants inverses sur le bus de puissance dans des conditions de batterie faiblement chargée ou d'absence de batterie. Ledit régulateur possède un enclenchement automatique de manière à être allumé et éteint sans risque.
