A major problem with catalog systems is that users can find the physical files in real file systems and, without proper access control, move, delete or otherwise alter the files. Typically, the physical files are "shared" for retrieval over a network from a remote location. According to the present invention, the physical files are nominally not "shared" for remote access over the network, but remote retrieval is permitted through intelligent agents.
