A method and apparatus for position determination is provided using measurements from both Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers and terrestrial-based Uplink Time Difference of Arrival (UTDOA) receivers. The method involves the transformation of downlink satellite measurements into equivalent UTDOA measurements by computing comparable cross-correlation coefficients and time differences of arrival with respect to a UTDOA reference station. The method includes a weighting operation whereby the relative weights of the UTDOA measurements and the relative weights of the GPS measurements are adjusted based on a theoretical scaling followed by empirical adjustments. The method further involves the efficient computation and combining ofmetries that are used to minimize the weighted error between candidate location solutions and the UTDOA and GPS measurements. This is done efficiently in two dimensions for UTDOA and in three dimensions for GPS measurements by increasing the complexity of searching operations as the optimal location solution is approached.
Un procédé et un appareil destinés à la détermination dune position sont fournis à laide de mesures à la fois des récepteurs du système de positionnement mondial (GPS) et des récepteurs de différence entre les temps darrivée de liaison montante terrestre (UTDOA). Le procédé concerne la transformation de mesures de satellite de liaison descendante en des mesures UTDOA équivalentes grâce au calcul de coefficients de corrélation croisée comparables et des différences des temps darrivée par rapport à une station de référence UTDOA. Le procédé comprend une opération de pondération, les poids relatifs des mesures UTDOA et les poids relatifs des mesures GPS étant ajustés sur la base dune mise à léchelle théorique suivie par des ajustements empiriques. Le procédé comprend en outre le calcul efficace et la combinaison de métriques qui sont utilisés pour minimiser lerreur pondérée entre des solutions de localisation des candidats et les mesures GPS et UTDOA. Ceci est effectué efficacement dans deux dimensions pour UTDOA et dans trois dimensions pour les mesures GPS en augmentant la complexité des opérations de recherche lorsque la solution de localisation optimale se rapproche.
