Application of Richard P. Heintz Title: Hybrid Propulsion System ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The hybrid propulsion system utilizes an internal combustion engine for driving a free-piston engine-pump unit, which pressurizes a working fluid, which in turn is used for driving a hydraulic motor. The free piston engine pump has opposed power pistons and pumping pistons fixedly connected therewith. Air is supplied to the combustion chambers of the power pistons from an intermediate air supply chamber associated with each of the power pistons. High and low pressure accu- mulators for the working fluid are also connected via a conduit and valving system to the pumping chamber so that fluid is supplied from the low pressure accumulator to the pumping chambers, and is pressurized by the engine-pump unit and discharged to a high pressure side of the system, which includes the high pressure accumulator. The cycling con- trol valve assembly is activated during startup of the engine-pump unit to drive the unit until self-sustained reciprocating movement of the unit can be achieved.
