A fused gene encoding a hybrid protein, the fused gene including a first sequence encoding a fragment of the diphtheria toxin molecule which renders the hybrid protein capable of penetrating the cytoplasmic membrane of a cell and incapable of killing the cell, fused to a second sequence encoding a portion of a polypeptide ligand effective to enable the hybrid protein to bind selectively to the cell. The invention provides for labelling of targeted cells for diagnostic purposes.
