ABSTRACT Hydantoin compounds having the general formula (I): Image (I) in which at least one of R1, R2 and R3 is a group other than hydrogen and R1, R2 and R3 which may be the same or different are hydrogen, halogen, alkyl, hydroxyalkyl or a group of formula OR7 in which R7 is a hydrogen, alkyl or aralkyl and X is alkyl, thienyl or a group of general formula (II): Image (II) in which R4, R5 and R6 which may be the same or different are hy- drogen, halogen, alkyl, hydroxyalkyl or a group of formula OR7 (R7 having the same meaning as above, provided that at least one of R1, R2 and R3 is a group of formula OR7, and pharmaceutically accept- able salts of the compounds. These compounds are useful in the treatment of diseases caused by stress. Also described are pro- cesses for preparing them. Excluded from these novel compounds are 5-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-5-phenyl hydantoin; 5-(4-methoxyphenyl)- 5-phenyl-hydantoin; 5-5-bis(4-methoxyphenyl) hydantoin; and 5,5- bis(3,4-dimethoxyphenyl) hydantoin.
